DISNEY BUYING LUCASFILM

So Disney will now own 'STAR WARS' and I assume the Indiana Jones franchise?

Yahoo News reports that "STAR WARS: EPISODE 7 feature film targeted for release in 2015."

Disney confirmed  that Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound are included in the transaction. It also confirmed a long-term plan of releasing a new feature Star Wars film every two to three years — beyond the planned Episodes 7, 8, and 9.

Seeing how Lucas has already ruined the franchise a thousand times over, this changes nothing. Except now we'll get even more; some bad and hopefully some good.

For those keeping track, Disney now owns The Muppets, Pixar, Marvel, ABC and now LucasFilm, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Skywalker Sound, The Ranch....

Bah.

Maybe Disney will retro fix the prequels with a Muppet Yoda instead of a CG Yoda...

The 3 prequels with a decent screenwriter and director could have been superb, it's been Lucas screwing things up since the late 90's, I don't want to get my hopes up but I actually think given to someone like Christopher Nolan, Joss Whedon, Jon Favreau to direct we could actually see a good Star Wars movie in 2015 !!! Or then again it could be just a load of back flipping Jedi and Sith for 3 more movies !!!!! :(

Yeah, there's potential for greatness... and more shit. Only time will tell. Atleast the news isn't "Lucas to write & direct Episode 7-12"

I say redo the Prequels, and have a buy-back program where Disney will purchase fans' copies of the Prequel tapes & DVDs to be destroyed. Let's have a do-over.

And these directors are not allowed to go near the new Star Wars:

-George Lucas
-Ridley Scott
-Michael Bay
-McG
-Paul W S Anderson
-Bryan Singer
-Brett Ratner
-Mark Steven Johnson
-Strause Brothers
-Wachowski Siblings
-Tim Story
-Stephen Sommers
-Robert Rodriguez
-JJ Abrams

*(gonna get flack for the JJ comment.. and maybe some others. but I stand by that list!!!) :)

I'm really not sure about this "episode 7 will be arriving in 2015"-thing... Why Disney, why? Just because of the big bucks? Why can't we just let the magic stay were it is? I do understand you will have to earn some money, but with this tight schedule... You know this is going to backfire, right? Star Wars movies are not just movies, there are for many people a way of life, even more than Marvel and comics are. If you fuck them up, it will be dramatic. You can reboot all Marvel stuff as much as you want, but you just can't reboot Star Wars. It can't be.

Oh and sorry I don't comment here more often, I'm a long time lurker but sometimes one can't just say nothing...

It would never happen, but getting James Cameron, The King of Sci-Fi, to direct Star Wars would be a nerd's dream come true. Well, maybe it would be just my dream ;-)

Tronified Star Wars promo materials when Tron 2 comes out. Yay.

the thing that bugged me most about the official press release, besides the "Episode VII: The Unveiling Of Palpatine's master Scrooge McDuck" is this line:

"Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney's global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise"

and then especially that last part. Of course that press release was aimed at investors, so they'd buy more Disney stock (I dont know if they are on wallstreet, though).

Screw the stories, we'll crank out as much as possible cos people will come to see it and buy the merchandise anyway.

Honestly I think it might be good, the person screwing up star wars has been George Lucas. Give it to anyone else and the result should be reverent, loving gold. Because George Lucas dosnt care about star wars. He hates it. thats why he refuses to allow you and I to watch the originals on dvd. Look at these

Say what you will about them, I think they are better than anything in the 3 prequels.
Thats star wars made by someone who cares.

Anyway. Also I just now ran into this so Im posting it here for you Jim

Lets add Uwe Bolle to the "Not Allowed" list.

Lets add Brad Bird to the "Yes Please" list (next James Cameron).

Seriously, I think this could be a good thing for Star Wars. Disney (through Pixar) has been making some great, quality movies. This isn't the same 'Direct to VHS/DVD sequel' Disney we saw in the 90s.

This is too much for me to ponder in terms of pending films, BUT!!! I have a couple of positive potential realities to this development:
1. Disney has a history of preserving the integrity of past creations- does this mean the REAL trilogy will be re-released, perfect and free of all of Lucas' baffling perversions to the beloved films or yore?
2. A cartoon series based on the REAL Star Wars that isn't overtly targeted towards toddlers. Seriously, think about it, Darth Vader has NEVER been animated. Darth f%cking VADER! Never! Animated! in a cartoon series. WTF George Lucas?

And a concern...
So it seems the expanded universe (I know it gets $h!t but I LOVE it, always have, always will) is going to die and be re-made in the image of it's new mouse-god's whim. As much as this sucks, don't forget the Star Wars comics are a major pillar of Dark Horse Comics... if they loose that it could mean the end of Dark Horse, or at the very least a crippling blow. Say it ain't so!!!

But honestly, if Disney means the REAL Star Wars trilogy will be restored I will forgive any and all abominations they might generate (for at least 5 minutes).

unfortuntely, FOX will retain rights to the Original Trilogy. So it will be up to them to release the Theatrical versions on blu ray. :(

Hmmm

http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2012-11-02/star-wars-episode-vii-what-do-we-know-so-far

I always thought the "there is another" line was 100% about Leia. Was Lucas just bs'ing in 2004 when he pretended otherwise?

Jim said...

Ha, you must have seen my intial, gut reaction post while I was working. Very quickly I realized I was sounding too harsh and not expressing myself accurately enough. So I quickly changed it. :)

According to Kurtz, during 'Empire', the line "No, there is another" referred to Luke's sister (NOT Leia) who was on the other side of the Galaxy. She was to then come into the picture down the road in Episodes 7-9, IF they were to ever do them. Lucas decided to change "the other" to Leia while writing 'Jedi'.

Well rat-farts, I missed that bit about Fox retaining the rights to the original trilogy... just assumed that for a $4billion price tag Disney would get, ya know, STAR WARS...
