BOWEN STATUE: HAVOK

YES!
I have been wanting a statue like this for decades!
He's a little too muscle-bound & I'd prefer a flat matte black.
But overall fantastic. I love this version of Havok!

Available now for preorder (Feb 2010)
I sense a birthday present to myself next year...

T-SHIRT OF THE DAY: TIN MAN VS C-3PO

GALAXY QUEST STUFF

By Grabthar's hammer, by the sons of Worvan! 10 years later, they are finally making stuff based on 1999's GALAXY QUEST! Unfortunately, Star Trek has since been rebooted and is no longer "silly" in the mainstream public's eye, which kind of deflates the parody aspect that was Galaxy Quest at the time of its release. Will people quickly snatch these up? Or will they spend their money on actual Star Trek gear instead? Regardless, I think I'll rewatch Galaxy Quest this week!

WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO MY INSANE MISSION?

quick back story:
In 1986 I saw ALIENS and was forever changed. I picked up every magazine I could find that had pictures from the movie and searched for the novelization, which no one in my area seemed to have. Then one day I found it! In my youthful impatience, I did not want to wait in the long check-out line, so I put the book down and left. I immediately regretted that decision and hurried back to the store the next weekend and discovered, to my horror, it was no longer there. The store manager said all unsold copies had their cover ripped off and were returned to the publisher. Blashpemy!!

That single regretful moment haunted me for the next 10 years as I searched to no avail for a copy. Anytime I hit a used bookstore, it was the first thing I looked for (still do). Then the internet hit and I found 4 copies on Bibliofind (remember, this was the early days of online shopping, before Amazon)! To help destroy that dark regret in history, I bought all 4 copies. While it did ease the wound, it did not heal. And so, I have continued my quest to buy more copies wherever I find them.

MY NEW GOAL is to have an entire bookshelf/bookshelves full of JUST the novelization of ALIENS. I shall bury the past in a mountain of copies! Insane? Fuk yeh its insane!! Honestly, it scares me a bit. But the Demon-Within demands its pound of flesh...

There are currently numerous copies of the ALIENS novelization available on Amazon for just $3.00!! I was seriously about to buy them ALL, but unfortunately, the standard shipping rate is $3.99. I require help and turn to my faithful readers....

WHO WANTS TO CONTRIBUTE TO MY MISSION?!
If you would like to help, please send a $7 Amazon gift card to jimsmash@gmail.com
*useful amounts would be: $7, 14, 21, etc as most books on amazon are $7 or more (including shipping)

"What, just 7-bucks? That's totally worth the free daily entertainment these past several years!"

I will also gladly take book donations if you have, or find, a copy!

For each book given to me, I will post a personal thank you here along with an updated pic of the psychotic shelf of strictly ALIENS novelizations! JOIN ME!!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: Wow, the response has been AMAZING and my bookshelf is quickly filling up! Thank you all who have generously contributed thus far!

UPDATE 02 (5/19/20): Over the past 11 years of Insane Mission, the price of the books on amazon has risen from $4 to $7 (or more). This post has been updated with the current prices. Thanks to all Past and Future contributors!

DALI AT-ATs

THEY GROW UP SO FAST: HOPE

I've been enjoying the recent CABLE series and watching HOPE growup - faster than I expected. It's been an interesting ride, although I do wonder how many times Bishop can have Hope in his crosshairs and fail to complete his mission (once again)- he truly is inept. In the upcoming Cable #21, it looks like we've jumped forward several years and Hope is now a teenager/young woman and ready to return to her Timeline (ours).

Cable #20 begins the "Homecoming" storling which is the prelude to X-MEN: SECOND COMING, the 3rd-and-final act of the "Messiah Trilogy". I hope it ends with her finally taking out Bishop, the man who's been hunting her since birth, once and for all.

They've been hinting that she's the reincarnation of JEAN GREY (but not Jean herself). My fears are she will return to our Timeline and hookup with with Logan. Hopefully she'll have no connection to Jean whatsoever, besides the red hair & green eyes.

Who is Hope, you ask?
Here's a "quick" rundown:
A few years ago, most Mutants lost their powers with only approx 198 mutants left. No new mutants were being born- the Mutant X-Gene was no more. Then a single mutant baby was born, her town decimated with no survivors. A race and battle ensued to find the baby, the last hope for Mutantkind. In the end, Cable rescued the baby (who they named "Hope") and Cyclops told Cable to jump into the Future with her to protect her. But a Betrayer stepped out of the shadows: BISHOP! Bishop believes with all his heart the baby is the same baby from his dark timeline that kills a million mutants in 6 minutes, igniting the mutant holocaust of his youth. He aims to stop that future from existing by killing Hope. So now Cable/Hope are leaping forward through time being hunted by Bishop (*they are unable to travel backwards in time due to malfunctioned time travel gadget). Bishop is so intent on stopping that future, he's willing to destroy the current one to flush out Cable & Hope; nuking continents, etc. And so, Hope grows from infant to teen in various holocaust futures, time leaping constantly, and being trained to survive and fight by Cable.

X-Men: Messiah Complex
Cable Vol 1: Messiah War
Cable Vol 2: Waiting for the End of the World

READER MAIL: HERCULES KILLED SPIDER-MAN?

I woke up this morning to find the following email from JimSmash Reader "Mr. G":
Hey, Jim! Man, once you think Marvel has run out of story ideas... BAM...they hit you with a world shattering event. I guess the poor treatment, writing and over all ignorance from the editors of Ole Webhead and his books for the past decade or so has finally pushed Marvel to go in a completely unexpected direction. Did you know, to my surprise, That Hercules just Killed Spider-Man? I couldn't believe it either.

I was flipping through pages of the new "Assault on Olympus"...and Spidey is there being a nuisance to the Lion of Olympus, and WHAM...a vicious uppercut from Herc. I was blown away. what a way to go out. I mean here is the son of a God, the strongest mortal to walk the Earth, considered to be the greatest fighter, and fiercest warrior of all Olympus, a being that has been observed drop kicking a bulldozer, someone who can lift (press) 100 tons (do you have ANY idea how friggin strong that is??), landing a clear shot to the jaw on a guy who's tendons are twice as elastic as a normal man, and can lift 10 tons ( which is a LOT...but no comparison).

I love Spidey, He's my boy. I grew up on him. I've seen him get his arm dislocated catching himself falling from a building, recovering from bruises, and cracked ribs from duking it out with villains on par with Puma, Hobgoblin, Kingpin, and Doc Ock. BUT HERCULES???? Man what was he thinking? Didn't he learn anything from when he 'fought' the Juggernaut. Guys like those are WAYYYyyy out of his league. He's not invulnerable or anything. I mean, it's not like he could take a pounding thru a brick wall and walk away from it or anything like that. He's just tougher than the average man. That's what his spider sense and his crazy agility and speed are for, to AVOID being hit. Man...this really kind of bummed me out to see him go out like that.

.........ohhh, what? He lived?... He did what? He got punched thru a brick wall by Hercules and walked away from it?.... Seriously?...no you're kidding right?... seriously?... well I guess I was wrong.

Marvel writers and editors still have no clue as to what they are doing.

THE GREAT MOVIE RIDE: ALIEN

Here are some ALIEN pics from Disney's THE GREAT MOVIE RIDE in Orlando, FL. I went down to Disney World in 1991 just to see this thing. I was 15 and super pumped for the upcoming ALIEN 3 release (pre-disappointment). The Alien part of the ride is short, but so so sweet... I never blinked once. Oh, and no Alien merchandise in the gift shop- Balls! I tried to touch the alien and was scolded by an employee. Religious prosecution blows.
Now, how do I convert my main hallway into this?
It's a life-goal.

TUESDAY COSPLAY: LION-YO

EARLY XMAS GIFT: KLINGON BATTLE CRUSIER ORNAMENT

Saw this at Hallmark the other day and couldn't pass it up nor wait for Christmas. I LOVE this ship! One of my favorite scenes with it/them is the beginning of ST: The Motion Picture when they encounter Vger - they just roll up on the mysterious Vger and fire all weapons.
*Klingons used to be awesome, before they were turned into whiny cliches.

EXCERPT FROM THE FINAL WORDS OF ABIN SUR

"Order is a condition of logical arrangement among the separate elements of a group. It is the structure of social organization. It is the rule of law and custom or the observance of a prescribed procedure. Order was established at the dawn of all creation. Creation's growth was thereafter guided by preordained random elements which were themselves the workings of perfect order. Creation soon gave rise to sentient life forms whose sense of logic and reason were flawed. This event in itself was a result of the progressive workings of perfect order. Soon, however, these sentient life forms began to strive against their predestiny. With each forward step in their development, they followed the inefficient logic of their underdeveloped minds. Thus was the need for intergalactic order-keepers recognized. Thus was the Corps formed."

"The Corps is the root of all order and knowledge. The Corps is the root of all order and knowledge. The Corps is the maintainer of life and guardian of truth. Without the Corps there would be only chaos and darkness. The Corps is without fear. Without anger or corruption. It is the creation of a highly-evolved mind and maintained by like beings whose destiny it is to maintain the order of things in the universe. The Corps has battled against the forces of chaos for a millennium. To serve is the ultimate honor."

"Knowledge is the sum of all reason and perception. Poser is force prevailing over mass. Power without reason is chaos. Force without knowledge is destructive. The Corps is ultimate knowledge harnessed to ultimate power. The lantern is the source. The Corps is the knowledge. The lantern is the power. Chaos is routed. Order is maintained. Wield the power. Maintain order. It is a great honor."

"The ring and battery are all you shall require. Be sober. Be vigilant. You are one of us now. This is about the survival of the entire races. Of worlds and cultures you've not ever dreamed of. Of a responsibility that transcends your mortal bonds. Of a power greater than your finite mind may imagine."

"I am Green Lantern of space sector 2814. I am dying. You have been chosen to be my successor."
You can read more in the 1989's GREEN LANTERN: EMERALD DAWN, a retelling of Hal Jordan's origin.

Also recommended, pick up 2009's GREEN LANTERN: SECRET ORIGIN, which is another retelling of the origin. Both are excellent and GL "Must Haves".

AVN: ALIEN VS NINJA

Don't get too excited - apparently the Ninjas' weapons have no affect on the alien creatures. So then what's the point? Lame. (source)

ANOTHER CABLE/ALIENS HOMAGE COVER: CABLE #20

The last one was homaging the poster to ALIENS. This time, with Cable #20, its homaging the JAPANESE poster for AVP-R. Cover artist DAVE WILKINS must be a fellow Aliens fan!... (although he just used an AVP-R image, so maybe he's not). This story arch involves Cable & Bishop in Space fighting off THE BROOD, which are Alien-esque creatures.... I'm guessing that's the reason for the ALIEN homage covers(?).
